Timber Folding Door Technical Details
Timber folding sliding doors are manufactured from hardwood and softwood harvested from sustainable sources. Our standard hardwood profiles are Meranti which are spliced into three sections and then glued together under high pressure with the grains running in opposing directions. Laminating the timber in this way helps to prevent twisting and distortion. European oak is available at additional cost.
Softwood doors are manufactured from engineered Pine which is laminated and comb jointed.
Using modern technology the panels are cramped squarely and all timber joints are bonded under pressure using polyurethane adhesive often used in aircraft construction. Polyurethane adhesive becomes harder in a moist environment which allows us to guarantee the structural integrity of these doors for a full ten years*
*Subject to minor routine maintenance
Technical Data
FD2U timber bifold doors are suitable for all locations including coastal regions and can be fitted as external or internal doors.

Sightlines
Our timber doors have slim sight lines as you can see in this image. The visible sight line between the glass for this style where all three panels fold and slide in the same direction is just 150mm. Some door styles may require additional meeting stiles which will widen the sightline. For more information on sight lines download CAD drawings for all profiles
Low Threshold Option
Our timber bi-folding doors are supplied with a 52mm high aluminium threshold and 45mm of this can be sunk into the floor to create a flush threshold. This is especially useful for internal doors or for external folding doors where decking or a patio is required to be at the same level as the internal floor. Other threshold options are also available including an external projecting cill.

Concealed Running Gear
All the running gear is concealed with the aluminium head and threshold profiles and panels run on maintenance free stainless steel wheel carriages in top and bottom tracks that operate quietly and smoothly to ensure ease of operation. The enclosed track system also ensures that the doors cannot be lifted from the track when the door is closed and locked.
High Security Hinges
Our hardwood and softwood folding sliding doors are fitted with high security hinges to prevent the pins being removed and the hinge being forced from the door. The right hand image shows the hinge roller carriages fitted to top and bottom of sliding panels with the left hand image showing inner hinge arrangement. Hinge fixings on both types are only accessible when the door is open unlike some systems that use face-fixed hinges. Standard hinge colour is black but bronze anodised and brushed nickel are available options.

High Security Locking Systems
Traffic doors on our folding doors are fitted with hardened steel multi-point high security hook bolts, shoot bolts and dead bolts locking systems as standard. The profile key cylinder is protected on the outside by a steel cylinder guard ensuring that the cylinder cannot be pushed, pulled or snapped by an intruder attempting to gain entry.
Intermediate panels feature internally operated shoot bolt locking to the top and bottom of the door and the stiles feature a tongue and groove channel that enable the door panels to lock together when the door is closed for enhanced security.
Security Lever Handles
Traffic doors are fitted with a high security lever/lever handle shown on the left which also incorporates a security cylinder guard to prevent the cylinder being attacked from the outside. The key is inserted through a slot in a stainless steel spinning disc and eliminates any opportunity for the cylinder to be snapped, pushed or pulled from the outside.
Internal Fold Flat Handles
The intermediate panels on our timber folding doors are fitted with internal fold flat handles shown on the right that allow the operation of the shoot bolt locking system whilst folding flat to allow panels to stack neatly against each other when the door is fully open.
Handle colour choices are gold, chrome, brushed nickel or black.

High Performance Weather Rating
Our timber bi-folding doors feature twin rubber EPDM weatherseals on each side of each panel and high performance weather seals at the top and bottom of each panel to ensure the high performance of the door.
The sample door has been tested at a UKAS accredited testing station and passed the PAS23 weather test to extreme weather conditions of over 300 pascals.
A Rated for Thermally Efficiency
All our folding doors are designed to minimise heat loss from your property and have been tested for their thermal efficiency.
The thermal rating of any material is currently measured in U value which records heat loss through the product. The lower the U value the greater the insulation value of the product.
Timber is a natural insulator and is one of the most thermally efficient building materials available. When glazed with our Staycool double glazing our timber folding door achieves an exceptionally low 1.4 U value.
Tests have also been simulated under BFRC criteria which confirm that our hardwood and softwood bifold doors achieve an A rating.
Staycool Energy Efficient Double Glazing
Softwood and hardwood bifold doors are now supplied with STAYCOOL double glazing as standard providing an exceptionally low 1.1 U-value ensuring maximum heat retention during the colder months of the year. STAYCOOL also provides solar control benefits for the summer reducing glare by 35% and solar heat reflection of 57% protecting your home and furnishings.
